Once upon a time, I did learn to conduct the fourth movement of this monumental symphony. I even learned the German: “Freude, schoner Gotterfunken, tochter aus Elysium . . . ” Joy, given by God, daughter of Elysium . . . this amazing music still gives me tears and goosebumps. Beethoven: one of the true all time great masters!
